A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault. He remains in custody at this time, police said.

A second man, 20, was also arrested on suspicion of being a football spectator failing to comply with a football banning order in accordance with the Football Spectators Act 1989.

Officers began patrolling Brighton’s streets on Sunday morning, concentrated in Queens Road and at Brighton Station.

Crystal Palace fans were kettled in at The Bright Helm in West Street at around midday before they were escorted to Brighton Station through the rear entrance by officers, vans and mounted police. Police dogs were also seen in the city centre.

Meanwhile, Albion fans watched on from The Grand Central pub opposite the railway station.

The home fans let off blue flares as they made their way into the station.

There was also a significant police presence at the Amex stadium ahead of the match, with several police vans pictured at the ground.

Additional safety measures were in force at the stadium, with a special train for away supporters, who were escorted back to Falmer railway station. The Terrace was also only open to home fans.

Speaking prior to matchday, a spokeswoman for Sussex Police warned fans that a public space protection order was in force in the city centre and that alcohol outside of licensed premises, including from bottles and cans, can be seized and removed by officers.

The spokeswoman added: “Sussex Police assesses each event and football fixture against a national set of standards in coming to a decision on how to provide an appropriate policing response in support of the club.

“We are of course aware of the historic and existing rivalries between Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace. This is considered in our planning and resourcing for this particular game, which starts some months before the match.

“There is likely to be congestion and disruption to travel into the city, particularly near Brighton station.”

The match kicked off at 2pm at the Amex in Falmer and ended in a disappointing defeat for the Albion – 1-0 to Crystal Palace.
