Curated by leading independent restaurant guide, SquareMeal, the guide contains the best eateries in the country.

Among them is Big Counter, based in Pollokshields in the Southside, which was described as a “cool, fun, lively, quirky” venue, serving British, European and Mediterranean meals perfect for special occasions and dinner.

Critics said: “[It] has a bistro-style dinner space, with a weekly changing seasonal menu that focuses on meat and fish.

“Inside, the minimal decor reflects the simple but delicious ethos of the cooking, with striking red tabletops contrasting against natural timber benches.”

The Southside institution placed number 55.

Also mentioned was Gloriosa, a West End restaurant with a “cool and cosy” vibe, plating up Mediterranean food.

The list highlighted its terrace as a special feature and said it’s a perfect venue for lunch, dinner and dates.

The list stated: “The menu at Gloriosa is focused on dishes which have been influenced by the Mediterranean and can be paired with a selection of wines from small independent European producers.

“The offering is made up of a short selection of small and large plates, designed to share (we’d recommend ordering five or six dishes between two).”

Gloriosa ranked number 89.
