Striker Elliott Nevitt has linked up with his former Gillingham manager and a move away from the club.

Nevitt joined the Gills under Mark Bonner – Cambridge United’s director of football – and he’s signed for them on a loan deal until the end of the season.

He’ll be playing under another former Gills boss, Neil Harris, whose side are currently in fine form in League 2.

Gills’ manager Gareth Ainsworth has already said players will be leaving this month to help facilitate new arrivals.

Ainsworth’s current preferred system has seen him utilise his wingers either side of a big striker, with a preference for either Josh Andrews or Sam Vokes up top.

Gillingham’s first new signing of the transfer window, midfielder Cameron Antwi, was announced earlier on Friday.

Nevitt signed for the Gills in the summer of 2024, after top-scoring for Crewe Alexandra the season before, goals that led to a promotion play-off final.

Having rejected a new contract at Crewe, Nevitt hoped to continue his goalscoring form at the Gills, but it hasn’t worked out for him.

Nevitt scored just five goals in his first season, having played 38 games. The striker has netted three times during the current campaign in 24 appearances. He was an unused substitute last weekend.

Speaking to Cambridge, he said: “I am really happy. The club is on a good run and their ambitions are my ambitions. I want to be at the right end of the league, fighting for something.

“I know it’s going to be hard to get into the team when everyone is going well, but that’s what you want – you can tell it’s a good place to be.”
