NIAS have confirmed that two patients have been transported to Royal Victoria Hospital

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service has told Belfast Live that two patients have been transported to hospital following a suspected gas explosion on the Lower Braniel Road in east Belfast this afternoon.

The incident occurred around 12.30pm today, (Wednesday) and triggered a mass response from emergency services including the deployment of several fire appliances and significant ambulance assets. The road was closed in both directions while the scene was being managed.

A NIAS spokesperson said the service dispatched two Emergency Ambulances, one HART Team, one Ambulance Officer, and one Emergency Planning Officer to the incident. According to the spokesperson, the Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS on board were also at the scene.

They added: “Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, two patients were taken to Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast by Ambulance.”

The situation remains ongoing, with the latest reports stating that a small number of residents have been allowed to return to their homes.

Earlier, DUP leader and MP for East Belfast Gavin Robinson reported the incident on his social media and said: “My thoughts are with anyone who may be affected by this incident.”
