The road has been closed to protect drivers
Diversion is in place on the A20 following a ‘significant’ diesel spillage near Folkestone. The A20 Round Hill Tunnel is currently closed coast-bound.
Specialist cleaning equipment, including a gully sucker and road sweeper, is en route, National Highways said. The closure is necessary to ‘protect road user safety’.
A National Highways spokespeson said: “We are working closely with the Environment Agency to manage and mitigate any environmental impact.
“The tunnel will reopen once the carriageway has been fully treated and it is safe for traffic to pass.”
Diversion Route
Road users are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs if heading eastbound.
- Exit the M20 at junction 13 onto the A259 Churchill Avenue.
- Travel east to the A260 Canterbury Road roundabout.
- Take the exit onto the A260 Canterbury Road and head north.
- At the Spitfire Way roundabout take the third exit on to the A20 coastbound.
The spokesperson added: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey. “
