Blizzard, by Quebec-based circus company, is a rowdy and frenetic 75 minutes which will leave you believing a Canadian can fly…

The family show runs through the confusing post-Christmas and pre-New Year period (up until New Year’s Eve) and there are still tickets to be had if you need to shake off the holiday semi-slumber.

A very excitable audience in the near-as-darn-it filled Dome were certainly up for it on the opening night on Saturday, whooping it up as soon as the lights dimmed for the start of the performance.

Billed as an acrobatic comedy (and there are plenty of goofy laughs) Blizzard began with plenty of dry ice and a mock-serious opening including an announcement from “The Canadian Ministry of Cold” warning of impending snow-related shenanigans.

The performers appeared wearing huge winter jackets and gas masks (slightly peculiarly) as a pianist provided a slightly sparse soundtrack with a bass-heavy electronic accompaniment.

But the atmospheric intro rapidly gave way to more upbeat proceedings and the amazing athletic prowess of the company.

Performers with muscles on their muscles (atop worryingly high structures) swung around similarly muscled performers before nonchalantly throwing them into the arms of others.

Stunning awe-inspiring aerial routines left you wondering how such things were possible as they passed over the first few rows of the gawping crowd.

The back-flips and somersaults were numerous, faultless and fairly amazing.

Amid the athleticism there were also wonderfully executed traditional circus skills with some nice original twists.

The juggling (there’s always juggling…) was top-notch, with faux snowballs (fauxballs?) whizzing around the stage, and colourfully-lit hula-hoops being hula-hooped by the troupe’s clown while standing on top of a piano, wearing not much more than a garland and some similarly colourful pants.

There was a fair amount of clowning in general, and although not all of the slapstick gags landed quite as well as the acrobats, there were plenty of fun moments and more than enough to keep the sprogs giggling.

Yet again the Brighton Dome has delivered a great international show to liven up the Christmas hols.
