The organisers of a Boxing Day Dip have confirmed the event has been cancelled.

Swimmers were set to take to the water at midday today for the quirky tradition in Dover, which had been organised by the lifeguard club.

But this morning, it was confirmed that the event would not be going ahead due to high winds.

A statement said: “Based on the sea state (unable to provide the planned on-water safety cover), and the wind speed, the current conditions do not meet our safety parameters, and therefore our insurance will not be valid.

“Therefore, we need to cancel the Boxing Day Dip. Thank you for your support.”

The club is hoping to reschedule the event for New Year’s Day.

Last year, more than 260 swimmers braved the English Channel in Dover for the tradition.

Dips in Folkestone and Whitstable are still due to go ahead today.

Deal’s annual dip was cancelled however last month.

This was following a ‘poor’ rating from the Environment Agency for the sea water along the beach in 2024. However, the rating was upgraded to ‘good’ in November, but organisers said there was not sufficient time to organise the day.
