A police car was rammed following a pursuit in North Belfast as officers used tyre spikes to stop a car before arresting a man.

Officers from the PSNI Auto Crime Team saw a vehicle that was speeding on Friday, December 19, and signalled for the car to stop. After it failed to do so officers began a pursuit, with the car they were following colliding with their vehicle.

Police say they deflated the cars tyres using “a hollow spike tyre deflation system” with the driver running off from the vehicle before being arrested on suspicion of a number of offences which include dangerous driving and failing to stop for police. The vehicle was also seized for being uninsured.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Auto Crime Team observed this vehicle driving at speed in the North Belfast area tonight. Initially the driver stopped then changed his mind deciding to be pursued by the team.

“After colliding with the police vehicle and then having it’s tyres deflated by a hollow spike tyre deflation system the driver abandoned the car and made off running.

“He was detained by the team a short distance from the vehicle and is currently in custody in relation to Dangerous Driving failing to stop for police and other motoring offences. The vehicle has also been seized for uninsured use.”
