Drivers are facing delays of more than 45 minutes

Drivers in Kent are being directed down a diversion route after the M20 was closed.

The motorway is shut in an eastbound direction between J8 (Hollingbourne) and J9 (Ashford) after a van struck a nearside barrier shortly before 11am on Tuesday morning (December 16).

The van also suffered a large oil spillage covering around 100 metres of carriageway, which needs to be cleared up. The eastbound carriageway remains closed while this essential safety work is completed, and will reopen as soon as the area has been fully cleared and confirmed safe for use.

In the meantime drivers travelling eastbound are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the M20 at J8 and take the third exit at the roundabout and at the next roundabout take the first exit on to the A20
  • Remain on the A20 until the junction with Fougeres Way where it will turn northwards towards J9 of the M20 and rejoin the M20 eastbound at J9.

If this closure impacts on your planned route you may need to allow extra journey time, plan ahead, re-route or even delay your journey.
