Anyone wishing to take part should gather at the War Memorial, in The Carfax, at 8pm on January 27.

During a meeting of the council, chairman Tony Bevis said: “At a time when intolerance, prejudice and discrimination is sadly increasing in our society, it’s vital that we reaffirm our commitment to standing against hatred in all forms.”

He added that the day was a reminder of shared responsibilities to ‘build a district and a world that is inclusive, compassionate and safe for everyone’.

Holocaust Memorial Day has been held in the UK since 2001 to commemorate the six million Jewish men, women and children who were murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of others who were murdered under Nazi persecution, and all those affected by genocides that have taken place since.

Mr Bevis added: “It is a moment for reflection, for learning and for honouring the victims and survivors, whose experience continue to shape our understanding of the consequence of hatred.”
