“Detectives at British Transport Police (BTP) have launched a murder investigation and the Town Council urges anyone who may have witnessed what happened, or the lead up to it, to get in touch as you may have vital information which could help our investigation.

“Please contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 428 of 10 September. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“Too much knife crime going on, about time it is stopped.”

MP for Lewes, James MacCleary described the incident as “awful”, advising the public to avoid speculation around the investigation.

He said: “I was shocked to hear about this awful incident at Seaford train station yesterday where a boy was stabbed to death.

“The police have the suspect in custody but it is made even worse by the fact that both the victim and the suspect are just 16 years old.

“I am staying in touch with police who are conducting a full investigation into the murder. I’m sure everyone will understand that speculation on motives or the identity of the suspect are unhelpful. Police will release that information in due course.

“For now, my thoughts are with the family of the young man whose life has been cut so short.”

Seaford railway station remains closed today (September 11) as the police investigation continues.

Louis Rambaud, chief customer officer at Govia Thameslink Railway, which runs Southern services from Seaford station, said: “We’re terribly saddened by this tragedy and the hearts of everyone I work with here at Southern and GTR go out to this boy’s family and friends, as well as the community, which is understandably in shock.

“We are doing everything in our power to help the police with their enquiry.”
