Rizzle Kicks frontman Jordan Stephens had less than nice things to say about Varndean School today during their performance at Victorious Festival in Portsmouth.

The Brightonian described the secondary school in Balfour Road as “f****** s***” during a set packed with hits – and a slice of controversy.

Durrington also found its way into Stephens’ crosshairs, after he introduced another member of the band supporting them.

“I went and found him in a Pizza Hut in Durrington-on-Sea, which is a s*** h***, and now he’s toured the world with us,” he said.

The band, which had been on hiatus for several years since its heyday in the early 2010s, has returned with a new album Competition is for Losers this year.

The set was sprinkled with some of this material.

But the real crowd-pleasers were the older gems in their back catalogue, including Skip to the Good Bit, When I Was a Youngster, Mama Do the Hump and Down with the Trumpets.

The band do clearly have love for Brighton though, after thanking the city for shaping their careers at a packed set at The Great Escape earlier this year.

Stephens met the other half of the band, Harley Alexander-Sule, at rap and performance workshops held by AudioActive’s Hip Hop Foundation project in the city.

The frontman – who shed several layers during the performance from hoodie to t-shirt and finally bare-chested – ended the performance by showing support for The Mary Wallopers.

The Irish band’s set was cut short by Victorious organisers for showing support for Palestine.

He said: “Everyone who stands up for ethnic cleansing, apartheid, genocide and starvation and famine should be respected.”

In a statement released by the festival, it said it was “very sorry that this situation has come about and will be making a substantial donation to humanitarian relief efforts for the Palestinian people.”
