Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth could be without three first-choice defenders this week.

The Gills host early leaders Chesterfield at Priestfield on Tuesday night and are definitely without the suspended Max Clark.

Shad Ogie and Conor Masterson both missed Saturday’s draw at Tranmere so Ainsworth may need to work on a fresh backline.

There’s also a doubt over midfielder Ethan Coleman, who lasted less than half an hour against Tranmere due to a head injury.

“You’re going to see another crazy one on Tuesday because we’ve lost, obviously, Max Clark for a game,” said the Gills boss.

“We’re going to have to see how Ethan is because that’s a hell of a scar on his head. But he’s gone up and headed the ball, saying to the rest of his team-mates, I’ll get injured for you.

“You can’t have a better commitment than that. I’ll get injured for Gillingham – and he did. He’s got a hell of a crack on his head. But that boy’s so committed.

“He’s got a great goal midweek and took a whack on Saturday. But he’ll be back and he’ll be strong.

“We can play three up top, two up top. They’re really adaptable, these boys, and that’s a real strength for me.”

Ainsworth wants the fans, who travelled in great numbers to Tranmere, to get behind his players at Priestfield.

“I’m hoping the fans will turn up on Tuesday and get behind us because this will be a tough task,” said Ainsworth.

“Chesterfield, one of the favourites, spent freely in the summer and they turned Bristol Rovers over 3-1 on Saturday. We need to do our best to get anything out of that one as well.

“We’ll have to find a way. We’ll have to find a way to play Chesterfield.

“Yes, they’re going to be good. Paul Cook, a great friend of mine, they’re going to be flying. But I’m looking forward to it now and see what we get Tuesday.”

Chesterfield boast a 100 per cent record with three wins from three, beating Barrow, Cheltenham and Bristol Rovers so far.
