Why this Sussex seaside pub is among the best in the UK

Fortune of War, on Kings Road in Brighton, is one of the area’s most popular venues.

Opening back in 1882, it is shaped like an upside-down boat, but its main attraction is its large beer garden, otherwise known as Brighton beach.

Big 7 Travel describes the spot as “a riot of Camden-esque interiors, DJ sets, reggae bands, great pizzas, and beautiful sea views”.

The publisher adds: “This popular boozer is not exactly a chilled-out coastal hideaway – especially with Brighton’s steady stream of stag dos – but it is a guaranteed good time.

“Embrace it for what it is: a beloved, buzzing pub planted right on Brighton’s busy boardwalk.”

On Tripadvisor, the pub has a 3.9/5 rating, with Google Reviews ranking it a 4.4/5.

Another visitor said: “What a lovely place, it feels like a happening beach bar outside but inside it’s also a cozy pub! Great vibes, friendly staff and a decent selection of beers.”

A third review says: “This bar/pub is a a must go when visiting Brighton. It is situated right on the seafront with ample outside seating. There is a good option of beers and other drinks. The staff are amazing.”
