Wealden District Council, Hastings Borough Council, Rother District Council, Eastbourne Borough Council, Lewes District Council, and the South Downs National Park Authority have launched the coordinated call for potential sites today.
The councils are inviting landowners, developers, community groups, and members of the public to put forward the potential sites to “help reduce unauthorised encampments”.
Councillor Ian Tysh, the portfolio holder for Planning at Wealden District Council, said that the councils are committed to working together to meet the “needs of all communities in East Sussex”
He said: “This joint call for sites is an important step in identifying appropriate locations and ensuring that we meet our legal and moral obligations to meet the housing needs of all our communities.”
The authorities are working together to seek to ensure that the accommodation needs of Gypsys, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople are met in a “fair and sustainable” way.
Sites are being sought for permanent residential pitches for Gypsies and Travellers, transit sites for temporary stays and yards for Travelling Showpeople, which may include space for residential use, equipment storage, and vehicles.
Sites of all sizes will be considered by the councils, including sites as small as 500 square meters, about the same size as a tennis court.
All the suggested sites put forward will be assessed against a criteria set by the councils to determine their suitability.
The call for sites will be open from today to October 5.
