Jordan Butterworth, 30, and his friend Nathan Rostron, 26, travelled to Crete, Greece, for a seven-day holiday on June 30th.
The pair had a boat party booked for July 3rd, but ‘didn’t feel up to it’ so abandoned the trip for a chill day, enjoying a couple of drinks and playing catch in the pool.
Jordan hopped out of the pool to retrieve one of Nathan’s ‘terrible throws’, and in return, his shot sailed over Nathan’s head.
Nathan dragged him out of the water and started performing life-saving CPR before he was rushed to the hospital.
There, doctors revealed he had dislocated his neck, fractured several cervical bones and had permanent nerve damage in his spinal cord requiring emergency surgery.
Both Jordan and Nathan had taken out travel insurance, but say it’s been voided and they’re unable to claim for Jordan’s accident because he had alcohol in his system.
Jordan is now receiving physiotherapy, but it’s unclear how much progress he will make.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by Jordan’s sister Sarah, aiming to raise enough money to bring him back to the UK to continue his treatment.

Nathan, from Blackpool, Lancashire, said: “It was terrifying. You would’ve thought if we went on the boat party, something like that would happen, but not by the pool at the hotel.
“We’d booked a boat party for that day but me and Jordan didn’t feel up to it and decided to leave it and have a pool day”
“We had a couple of drinks by the pool and we were in the pool throwing this ball at each other. I threw it outside the pool because I’ve got a terrible throw.
“Jordan got out to get the ball and as he threw it back in, I don’t know what happened but it went over my head.
“I turned around in the pool and I turned back around and saw Jordan in the water. I just thought he was splashing his face.
“It took not even 10 seconds and all of a sudden I clicked and there was no response. I ran over as fast as I could.
“I couldn’t even guess how it happened because I turned around and the next thing he’s in the water.
“The colour was drained out of him and he wasn’t breathing.
” I think it was a natural instinct but I dragged him out, shouted for help because I couldn’t quite lift him over and then started giving him CPR.
“Luckily enough I was able to get him to breathe again, but it was really scary.”
Jordan was paralysed from the neck down and after being rushed to hospital doctors performed an emergency six-hour surgery.

He is now stuck in Greece having a small amount of physio each day, while Nathan had to fly home.
Jordan’s family is now hoping to raise enough money to bring him home.
Nathan said: “He’s a very strong character and the nicest guy ever. He’ll do anything for anyone and the fact he’s had to go through this is absolutely horrible.
“The vital part is we do get the word around to get him home as soon as possible.
“It would be absolutely brilliant to see him back in the UK, I felt horrible coming back by myself.
“He had travel insurance but because they found alcohol in his system they’ve refused to contribute.”
