Goalkeeper Glenn Morris insists Gillingham are in a good place – despite being outgunned by League 1 big boys Luton Town in their latest pre-season clash.
The experienced keeper doesn’t want to look too deep into a 2-0 defeat against Luton and insists it’s all about making sure they’re right for when it matters most.
Gillingham have two more pre-season matches left, against Ebbsfleet and Dartford, before kicking off the season with a trip to Accrington Stanley on August 2.
“We’ve had a good workout, first and foremost,” Morris said, after their latest friendly outing.
“The boys put in a real good shift. They’re a really strong team, and you’d like to think they’ll be right up there in League 1.
“It was, in spells, a difficult afternoon, but second half, we got to grips with it and if anything, we had the better chances.
“They’re a great team. They’ve got a lot of pace, move the ball really quickly, they hurt us a couple of times and it was unfortunate.
“But we had some good chances. Second half we were in the ascendancy and unfortunately missed the penalty. We had some chances to try and get a goal but it’s pre-season. It doesn’t really matter.
“I think we came out of it feeling strong as a group and healthy, most importantly, that’s the main thing.
“The boys looked fit and where we want to be. We’re in a good place. Everything’s going in the right direction.
“It’s difficult to know where you’re at in terms of comparing to other teams but we can’t worry about that. We’ve just got to worry about ourselves.
“We had a good workout against Southampton midweek. We played Luton and both teams are higher than us.
“There were large spells of it where we’ve really gone toe-to-toe with them, so some real positives.
“We’ll see where we are when we get to the first game of the season but at the minute, I think we’re quite happy.”
Looking ahead to a Tuesday night game at Josh Wright’s National South side Ebbsfleet, Morris said: “Ebbsfleet have got a real strong squad and I think they’ll fancy putting a bit of a show on themselves.
“It’ll be a tough game and we’ll have to be right at it on Tuesday and then obviously then we go into the week before the season at Dartford (on Saturday).
“We want to come into our peak at that point and see where we’re at.
“We don’t want to look too far ahead. Just tick off the training days, tick off the next day and think about the games when they come. At the minute we’re in a good place.”
