Southampton won the first match 1-0 and the second 3-1, Gillingham’s late strike coming from the penalty spot.

Jonny Williams made his first appearance of pre-season, starting the first game, but Sam Gale wasn’t involved. Elliott Nevitt and Aaron Rowe remained absent.

The matches were played behind-closed-doors, with Gillingham getting 60 minutes into the legs of their players for the first time. Games against Dover and Reading before that saw the Gills name different teams in each 45-minute half.

Southampton report that the games were played “with a competitive edge” and that Jack Nolan scored from the penalty spot for the Gills.

In game one, the Saints hit the bar early on through Ryan Fraser, lobbing an effort goalwards over the advancing Jake Turner.

Cameron Archer put the Saints in front, with half-time coming after 30 minutes. The second half ended goalless, with Turner making a couple of saves to keep the hosts from extending their lead.

Home keeper Aaron Ramsdale kept out an effort from Remeao Hutton and according to the Saints, Marcus Wyllie “missed a glaring chance” to equalise.

Ramsdale also denied Joe Gbode as he had a chance from close range.

The Gills made a slow start to game two as Ross Stewart and Tyler Dibling struck early on for the hosts.

Glenn Morris kept out a powerful effort from Kuryu Matsuki as they reached the break with Southampton leading 2-0.

In the second period, Morris again saved from Matsuki and denied Charlie Taylor, but the Gills got a goal back after Josh Andrews’ shirt was pulled, leading to the referee pointing to the spot and Nolan drilled his spot-kick home.

Joe Aribo went close from distance with a shot that grazed the Gills crossbar, and further late chances saw Morris save from Shea Charles and Brereton Diaz shoot wide.

Masuki converted Joe Aribo’s cross, almost on the line, to complete a 3-1 win for the home side.
