Falmer Pond in East Street, Falmer, is prone to evaporating rapidly during heatwaves, and during “exceptionally dry seasons” in previous years, volunteers have rescued fish and called on residents with ponds to accommodate them.
But this year, no community effort has transpired despite water levels being “extremely low”.
Five fish have already died, and one resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, fears many more could follow suit.
“No one has been up here – seagulls are just standing there and eating the dead fish”, she said.
“If someone doesn’t help out and do something, more will die.
“Years ago Lewes Fire Brigade would come and fill it up during hot periods.
“It’s sad the council has allowed this to happen, if someone allowed fish to die in their own pond it would be classed as animal cruelty and reported.
“There is no other word for it than cruelty.”
The land is owned by Brighton and Hove City Council who in previous years confirmed it would not be trying to refill the pond to save dying carp.
“It’s literally devastating to see it”, the Brighton resident said.
“Over last two days the levels have dropped suddenly. A few fish are still alive but if they don’t do something urgently they will die and be wiped out for good.
“Time is of the essence.”
