Matt Parkinson was delighted to get one up on his twin brother after producing career-best T20 Blast figures last week.

Parkinson took his first five-fer in Vitality Blast cricket, picking up 5-23 in four overs against Essex. It was his best T20 bowling return for eight years.

But it also meant he completed the set of taking five-fer in all three forms of the game ahead of twin brother Callum, who currently plays for Durham.

“I didn’t think I’d ever get a five-fer,” said Parkinson. “I’ve played nearly 130 T20 games now and have been close a couple of times.

“To have a five-fer in all three now is fantastic. My brother doesn’t have a five-fer in T20 cricket, so that’s a bonus!

“I’m really happy, to be honest. For the fifth wicket, I didn’t think he was going to try and smack me for six because it was my last ball but he was greedy so luckily it paid off.

“We had a decent start with the ball. I thought Fred Klaassen was fantastic in his first two overs and Tom Rogers.

“It’s always nice to come on when you’ve had a decent first six overs. Obviously, the game was still in the balance after six, but to get Jordan Cox early was nice.

“It did spin, to be fair, a lot. We probably didn’t think it was going to spin that much. I don’t think they thought it was probably going to spin that much, either, so to get 5-23 was nice and not something that I had on my radar when we started bowling.”

Chelmsford is not a notorious happy-hunting ground for spinners with the short boundaries straight down the ground.

But Parkinson’s certainly felt at home there in recent seasons, taking a hat-trick against Middlesex 12 months ago.

He was nearly on for a hat-trick again but “got too greedy” and “bowled a rubbish ball” as he conceded a wide.

“I wasn’t overly excited, to be honest,” confessed Parkinson. “It’s not one of the grounds I look at and think I’m going to do well there.

“I enjoyed it here last year, but a year is a long time so to get five-fer was lovely.”

Kent host Northamptonshire in the County Championship at Canterbury from Sunday before returning to T20 Blast action at home to Sussex Sharks on Friday, July 4.
