Large groups of young people met near Hove Lawns last night (June 17) with police monitoring the gathering.

Ahead of the event, Sussex Police said it had deployed additional resources to patrol the area following a recent rise in youth disorder, including multiple reports of violence during large unsupervised meetups.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police has since confirmed that a 16-year-old girl was arrested for being drunk and disorderly, later being de-arrested after being taken home to parents.

Several individuals were found in possession of cannabis which officers seized and community resolutions were issued.

Officers also supported a number of teenagers who appeared to be intoxicated and in a vulnerable state.

Chief Inspector Simon Marchant said: “We are continuing to take robust action following recent incidents and prevent further disorder. Officers will maintain a visible presence in key areas across Brighton and Hove, helping to keep our communities safe.

“We’re urging parents and carers to speak with their children and advise them of the dangers of attending large, unsupervised gatherings, as often parents are unaware that their children are attending these events.

“These situations can escalate quickly, often fuelled by alcohol, and can lead to serious harm.

“We want young people to enjoy themselves following the end of exams, but not at the expense of their safety or that of others.”
