National Rail said the issue is expected to continue impacting services until 7.45pm.

Meanwhile, Network Rail Scotland revealed that they are currently responding to the fire next to the West Coast Mainline near Shieldmuir.

The travel firm said the blaze has ‘damaged’ signalling equipment in the area and they are ‘currently unable’ to operate trains through the area at this time.

The busy West Coast Mainline runs from Glasgow in Scotland to the UK’s capital city, London in England.

A National Rail spokesperson said: “There is a fire next to the track in the Shieldmuir area, closing all lines running through this station.

“As a result of this, trains running between Motherwell and Lanark/Carstairs may be cancelled, delayed by up to 15 minutes, revised or diverted.

“This issue is expected to continue to impact services until 7.45pm.”

A ScotRail spokesperson added: “We’ve had a report of a lineside fire which may have damaged signalling cables between Shieldmuir and Lanark.

“We’re not able to run trains through the area until this is cleared.

“Train services between Glasgow Central and Lanark will therefore be delayed or revised.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
