Officers were called to the Co-op store in Ham Road, Shoreham, after the incident, which occurred at around 7am today, May 10.
A man entered the shop and threatened staff with a hammer, demanding money, Sussex Police reported.
He is described as white, approximately 5’11” and of large, stocky build with copper-coloured hair. He was wearing a black hoodie, black tracksuit bottoms and black trainers.

Sussex Police has linked this robbery to an incident at Shoreham News in Buckingham Road moments earlier, where a man is reported to have threatened staff and tried to steal cigarettes.
A spokeswoman for the force said: “Police are urgently carrying out enquiries and gathering CCTV footage in an effort to identify the man.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 999 quoting serial 270 of 10/5.”
