The newly revamped toilets at Ovingdean Undercliff include updated facilities, family rooms and cubicles with grab rails in both the men’s and women’s toilets, as well as a refurbished accessible toilet at the front of the building.

The new site also now contains an additional cubicle in the women’s toilets.

The toilets are open between 10am and 6pm during the summer (April 1 to September 30), and 10am to 4pm during winter (October 1 to March 31).

The facilities have been updated (Image: Brighton and Hove City Council) Councillor Tim Rowkins, cabinet member for net zero and environmental services, said: “Ovingdean Undercliff is a well-used seafront site, and I’m delighted to see it revamped and reopened to the public in time for summer.

“We have been working tirelessly to refurbish and reopen toilets across the city so that residents and visitors can get out and enjoy themselves with confidence.

“As well as dramatically improving our toilet facilities, our refurbishment programme has had a major focus on making sure they are accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities and young families.

“We know how essential it is to be able to access suitable public facilities in the places where they need them, and it has been a top priority for us.”

This revamp is part of a second phase of work to improve the condition of the city’s toilets, provide new facilities and make them accessible for everyone. This included refurbishment of the toilets at Goldstone Villas, new public toilets at the Outdoor Sports Hub in Hove Beach Park, and new Changing Places toilets at Preston Park, St Ann’s Well Gardens and Stanmer Park.

In March, the facilities in Goldstone Villas in Hove reopened as well as the new public toilets at the Outdoor Sports Hub in Hove Beach Park.

In October, Changing Places toilets in Preston Park, Brighton, opened.

In June, The MacLaren Pavilion at the Level in Brighton was developed into a split-use café and public toilet – currently being remarketed.

In April, the facilities in the Royal Pavilion Gardens in Brighton were reopened and a new Changing Places toilet was opened at the One Garden in Stanmer Park, Brighton.

The public toilets in Pavilion Gardens were closed in October 2022 due to poor condition, vandalism and high levels of anti-social behaviour.

Hundreds of residents had signed a petition urging the council to reopen the facility.

The then Green administration finally u-turned on their original decision to axe the facilities.

In March, Black Rock, Greenleas, and Hollingbury Park toilets were opened all year round as part of changes to the service.

In July 2023, seven more public toilets were opened at Blakers Park, Greenleas, Easthill Park, Hove Cemetery South, Queen’s Park, Stanmer Village and Vale Park.
