The luxury lifestyle magazine was launched in May 1965 with Arundel on the front cover, and cost 2/6d – the equivalent of 13p today – while promising to feature ‘the right blend of the country scene, of town activities and of social and sporting events’.

Now as Sussex Life approaches its 60th anniversary, it is are commemorating the historic milestone with a special souvenir issue in which it is giving away a 60-prize giveaway, including the stunning Sussex Life diamond pendant designed by Wakefields jewellers in Horsham.

The premier title will also host an exclusive birthday party with VIP guests and a selection of subscribers in attendance at Tottington Manor on Friday, June 27, 2025.

Sussex-based celebrities have been congratulating the magazine on its anniversary with Chichester-based best-selling author Kate Mosse saying: ‘In these challenging global times, where old certainties are collapsing, it’s wonderful to have a magazine that reminds us of where we are now, where we come from and all the people with whom we are sharing that same journey in our wonderful green corner of England. It’s about belonging.’

British TV presenter and wine expert Olly Smith, who lives in Lewes, says: ‘Sussex Life means the very best of our fabulous county and the thing I love most about the magazine is that it feels like a celebration every time I read it, birthday or not. Happy Jolly Birthday to Sussex Life!’

There are stars and local celebrities galore in the special edition of the magazine which also offers readers the chance to win prizes including a one-night stay at Ashdown Park Hotel for two with breakfast and dinner, a £500 Ionian Villas voucher for an escape to Greece, a Women’s Health Check from The McIndoe Centre in East Grinstead, a spa day for two at South Lodge Hotel and a 60-minute ‘flight’ in a Spitfire Simulator from spitfires.com

The Diamond Anniversary special is very different to the first 88-page edition of Sussex Life which featured articles on why Chichester Cathedral was in danger of collapsing, a short interview with Leonard Woolf – husband of writer Virginia, an article on Crowborough-based Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and even how an infestation of the death watch beetle was being tackled in East Grinstead.

The Diamond Anniversary souvenir special edition of The Argus’s sister title Sussex Life is on sale from Friday, May 23, 2025. Readers can also go online at sussexlife.co.uk to enter the competition to win the prizes

Editor Karen Pasquali Jones says: “It’s a phenomenal achievement to be celebrating our diamond anniversary. Sussex Life celebrates the very best in our county and even though we are 60 we don’t look it.

“The magazine is a heritage title but it’s constantly evolving to appeal to a multi-generational audience with its vibrant mix of content and glossy, upmarket design.

“The content may have changed over the decades but our values haven’t – we put our readers at the heart of everything we do and that’s why we are giving away 60 gorgeous prizes and have invited loyal subscribers along to the celebrations. This is a very exciting anniversary, and we are looking forward to the next 60 years.”
