A man has tragically lost his life following a horrific crash in Gwynedd. The elderly motorist was involved in a three-vehicle collision on the A5 Beach Road, Bangor, on Tuesday afternoon (April 29).
Another woman is critically ill and two others have sustained “serious injuries”. The road was shut for several hours as multiple emergency services attended the scene. North Wales Police (NWP) were alerted to the incident, which occurred directly outside the city’s ambulance station, just before 1pm today.
The vehicles involved were a Toyota Yaris, a Vauxhall Vivaro and a flatbed transit.
The elderly male driver of the Toyota Yaris was airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. Tragically, he passed away in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, April 30). For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here
The female passenger was rushed to Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, where she remains in a critical condition, reports North Wales Live.
Both female occupants of the Vauxhall Vivaro were also taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd with serious injuries.
In addition to police and Wales Air Ambulance, the Welsh Ambulance Service and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were present at the scene.
Det Insp Tim Evans of NWP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit expressed: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this difficult time.
“We’d like to thank all those who have already spoken to us. However we are appealing for witnesses or anybody who may have been travelling along Beach Road just prior to the collision and who may have dash cam footage to come forward.
“The road was closed for a number of hours to allow our forensic collision team to carry out initial enquiries and I would like to thank the local community and motorists for their patience.”
