Remeao Hutton’s goal on Saturday clinched Gillingham a point at Salford City – on a ground he loves to play at.

Hutton’s first goal for the Gills was a decent one, closing a defender down and then curling the ball home with his weaker foot after winning possession. It was Gillingham’s second goal in a 2-2 draw.

Reaction: Defensive resilience pleases the Gills boss

The 26-year-old’s only other goal in the Football League came while playing for Swindon Town, scoring for his former team at Salford last season in what was another 2-2 draw.

That goal for Swindon took a couple of ricochets before hitting the net, but his strike on Saturday was a pinpoint finish, curled beyond the keeper.

Hutton, speaking afterwards, said: “This is the only place I’ve scored!

“I’ve only scored two goals. The gaffer wanted me and (left wing-back) Max (Clark) to get a bit higher.

“When their left centre-back got it, I just thought to myself: ‘Jump and cut off the line’. He kind of played it to me, and then I just thought, ‘Let me take him on and go inside and shoot.

“Normally, I would have tried to cross it, but the gaffer said that he wants me to get more goals. I think (striker) Elliott Nevitt was somewhere about, but I just thought, ‘Let me be greedy and shoot’.”

Hutton’s more about crossing for his team-mates than picking out the top corner and said: “I don’t like shooting at all – I prefer crossing. But I’ve done it and it paid off.

“I just want to play here every week now, I guess!

“The last goal two deflections and then went in. This is a proper goal, my first proper goal, so I’m happy with it.

“I think I’ve probably practiced that finish about 300 times in my career and it’s only paid off once.”

Commenting on the team’s performance, Hutton said: “We dug in and played a bit more of a physical game.

“We need all the points that we can get at the moment to try and make that gap bigger for safety so we take the draw and just move on to Tuesday (away at Chesterfield).”
