Lewes District councillor Sean MacLeod, who represents Newhaven North but has recently announced he is stepping down from the role, made the unpleasant discovery while heading to the bait shop before his son went fishing.

It is his believed the waste is left behind by lorry drivers – many of whom are driving from Europe and parking up in the estate for the night.

“Drivers are sleeping and eating in the area and, sadly, doing their business there too, it was everywhere and is frankly disgusting”, Mr Macleod said.

“It’s time the council start looking at a proper lorry park – we’re at that stage now.

“Drivers used to park overnight at the port, but they’re not allowed to do that anymore so now they’re parking elsewhere and moving on the problem.

“Lewes District Council has said they will clean it up but the council, probably the county, needs to look at whether parking restrictions need to be introduced.”

A spokeswoman for East Sussex County Council said: “We have not received any requests for additional parking restrictions relating to HGV parking on the Avis Way industrial estate.

“We review our parking areas every 16 to 18 months to make sure they meet the changing needs of our local communities. In each review we consider requests for new controls and changes to existing ones.

“There is a more detailed guide to our parking reviews available on the parking pages of our website as well as an online form people can complete to ask for changes to parking restrictions or request new ones.”

A spokesman for Lewes District Council confirmed they would bring the issue to the attention of environmental health colleagues.

One social media user said: “If there were better local facilities for truckers the issue might not arise” while another argued “that’s absolutely no excuse to be that rancid”.
