Gillingham manager John Coleman felt the big decisions went against his team again on Saturday.

Coleman has already spoken about penalty decisions going against his team since taking charge and there was another one this weekend at Carlisle.

Gillingham striker Elliott Nevitt appeared to have been chopped down by home goalkeeper Gabe Breeze in the second half. Nevitt had earlier seen a shot bounce off the underside of the bar and over the line, according to the Gills boss. Referee Scott Jackson waved play on both occasions.

It was an entertaining game at Carlisle, with two teams eager to get a much-needed win, but the goals just wouldn’t come.

Coleman, now eight games without a win, said: “I thought we had an excellent first half. We took the game to them against a strong wind.

“We could have scored a couple of goals, should have scored a couple of goals. We did score one but it’s difficult to complain about that. The Linesman couldn’t have been in a great position to give it, so you’re not wanting them to guess.

“I’ve seen a replay and it looks as though it’s gone over the line but you’re clutching at straws if you’re asking a linesman to guess. I’d be mortified if that was given against me. That’s just the luck of the draw.

“It hit the underside of the bar for Robbie McKenzie (at Walsall) and bounced into net. It hits the underside of the bar and has gone over the line and not bounced it to the roof of the net for Nev.

“That’s just bad luck but we played some really good football against the wind in the first half and then getting the wind in the second half probably changes the dynamics of the game.

“They came into it more in the last 15. I wouldn’t say we were hanging on because we were still asking questions of them.

“The ball bounced around their box loads of times but then (there was the) pen on Nev. We could moan but it gets you nowhere.

“It’s definitely a foul. But that’s football for you. Sometimes you get the decisions, sometimes you don’t and there’s no point just bleating about it and saying that’s the reason why we haven’t won.

“It feels as though we’re cursed. On any other given day, it’s not even an issue, the Elliott Nevitt penalty.

“I can’t start calling refs. That’s not the right thing to do. We’ve got to focus on what we can do.

“We’re having absolutely zero luck. Well, we are. We’re having lots of luck, bad luck. But it’ll get there.

“We keep on working hard. You can see the spirit in the camp with the lads.

“Bradley Dack’s throwing his body in front of a shot in the 93rd minute. That tells you everything you need to know.

“We’ll keep on working and our luck’s got to change soon.”

The Gills could gave lost it near the end when Glenn Morris pulled off a great one-handed stop to deny Carlisle substitute Stephen Wearne.

“That’s why he’s such a good keeper,” Coleman said.

“[It was a] great save. The game could have finished 3-3.

“We were going a little bit gung-ho trying to win it. There’s gaps getting left, left, right and centre. But in the main, we’ve tightened up, that’s two clean sheets on the spin.

“The lads are working hard. Even the subs, they’re all rallying around each other.

“We’ll keep going, we’ll keep making chances.

“We’ll focus on what we can control. We can’t control what the referees do.

“I’ve spoken since I’ve been at Gillingam about how difficult it is to be a referee, how hard it is to make split-second decisions. We’re just at the wrong end of a lot of them at the moment. Probably four in the last four games. We’ll keep going.”
