Brighton and Hove City Council took action last night when it came to light that what is left of the Royal Albion Hotel and surrounding scaffolding was at risk of ‘catastrophic failure’.

The landmark hotel was destroyed by a huge fire in the summer of 2023 and work has been carried out since on behalf of Britannia Hotels to demolish the structure.

Royal Albion Hotel at risk of collapse as A259 closed – live updates

A small section of the A259 by the hotel – between the Aquarium roundabout and East Street – has been shut off in both directions while works to secure what is left of the building is carried out.

Protective barriers have been put up as part of this, the council said.

The council explained that due to the works being carried out, the closure is expected to last well into next week.

A spokeswoman said: “The road closure and barriers need to remain in place while risk assessments and demolition work takes place to prevent unnecessary risk to pedestrians and road users.

“The work to make the structure safe is being carried out by Britannia Hotels and their contractors. It is expected to start over the weekend and will carry on into next week.”

Pedestrians and cyclists are expected to still have access but vehicles, including buses and coaches, will not be able to use this part of the road with diversions and signs in place.

National Express buses will stop at the southwestern corner of the Old Steine rather than Pool Valley.
