Gillingham loan forward Asher Agbinone looks set to return to his parent club for injury treatment.

Agbinone made four starts for the Gills after joining on loan during the January transfer window but has picked up a hamstring injury.

Agninone, 19, made his debut against Doncaster Rovers and played 74 minutes but missed the game after that with a back issue.

He played most of the match against Grimsby, half a game at home to Notts County and lasted 52 minutes against Barrow before going off injured.

Manager John Coleman confirmed on Thursday that the forward was set to go back to Palace for rehab after describing it as a “medium-term injury.”

There was more encouraging news elsewhere with defender Conor Masterson and midfielder Ethan Coleman both back running on the grass following their injuries.

Coleman wasn’t sure either would be ready in time for this weekend’s game against Crewe.

Marcus Wyllie and Euan Williams are also on the way to seeing off their injury issues.

“We’re getting positive news rather than negative news,” said the Gills boss.

Recent signing Nelson Khumbeni wasn’t in the matchday squad for Tuesday’s game at Walsall but, like top scorer Jayden Clarke, he’s fit and available when needed.

Coleman said: “Nelson’s still coming to terms with the move down here, which is a big shift.

“We chose to go down a certain path (on Tuesday). Nelson could have easily started the game. It was a toss-up whether he started or not.

“He was certainly up for selection. It was 50-50 whether he started the game, but we felt we had better options if we were going to put somebody on (from the bench). That’s why he wasn’t a sub, but he was closest down.

“We’ve got a big squad and so people are going to be disappointed, aren’t they?

“Sometimes you might rotate your subs for what you think you need for a certain day.

“Jayden’s our leading goalscorer, so he hasn’t been cast aside like people might think.

“We’ve got lots of talent. Aaron Rowe is a very talented player and young George Wakeling is a classic example. There’s still something in him that we could get out.

“There’s players there that mightn’t get involved, and everyone says, ‘oh, they’re getting cast aside’. They’re not.

“They’ve just got to keep working hard, and then when they get the opportunity, they’ve got to take it. That’s the same for any player.

“There’s no favourites here. There’s no one who’s nailed on to play. There’s no cast-iron certainties.

“Every shirt’s up for grabs every week, and it’s the ones who do the most will get it. That might be their attitude in training. That might be how they play in training. That might be how they show their fitness, what they bring to the party. There’s loads of things that you’d have to determine.

“You can only pick 18 players in your squad so people are going to be disappointed. What we did on Tuesday was we made sure everyone travelled.

“We want to get this togetherness, that even if you’re not in the 18, you’re there to support the lads, because you might need them to support you the following week, and that’s the way it’s going to be.

“That’s the only way you build a successful football squad, that’s the only way you do it, by getting everybody buying into that it’s a collective, it’s not a personal thing.

“When you’re needed, you’re needed, and you give your all, and when you’re not needed, you give your all in support for the people who are playing.”
