CBS News reported that the total number of aviation incidents—including crashes, collisions, and other issues—has averaged around 385 per year over the last five years. Despite the recent accidents, aviation experts continue to emphasize that flying is safe, with data proving that most aviation accidents happen due to human error rather than mechanical failure.
Regarding the recent plane crashes this year, President Donald Trump stated, according to NBC News, “We have to have our smartest people” working in aviation. The former 45th and now 47th president added, “It doesn’t matter what they look like, how they speak, who they are. … They have to be talented, naturally talented. Geniuses. Can’t have regular people doing their job. We can’t have regular people doing this job. They won’t be able to do it, but we’ll restore faith in American air travel.”
How Many Delta Planes Have Crashed?
According to the FAA, Delta has experienced one crash so far in 2025. The incident occurred on Monday, February 17, 2025, when a Delta airplane crashed while attempting to land at Toronto Pearson International Airport, ultimately flipping upside down. Despite the crew’s best efforts, there were 80 passengers on board, with 18 taken to the hospital and 12 sustaining injuries, per ABC News.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow addressed the crash on social media, stating, “I’m relieved to learn that all passengers and crew are accounted for after today’s plane crash at Toronto Pearson. Thank you to the first responders, crew and airport staff for their quick actions and commitment to keeping everyone safe.”
