Homebase has revealed that 33 stores will be closing this month, including its shops in Hove, Lewes and Chichester.

The garden chain was waiting on around £5 million of tax rebates before collapsing into administration in November.

A spokeswoman said: “Last month, Homebase announced 33 stores confirmed for closure in February.

“Affected team members have been given at least two weeks notice of their effective date of redundancy by their Employee Representative and Store Manager, followed by confirmation letters sent to their home address.

“All employee wages and benefits will be paid for their period of employment.

“The Joint Administrators’ priority is working closely with government agencies to provide support to affected employees.”

Homebase’s collapse came amid reports that banking giant Wells Fargo declined to extend the group’s lending facility due to concerns about its finances.

The chain appointed administrators at consultancy Teneo after it was hit hard by an “incredibly challenging” three years for the DIY sector.

Administrators struck a deal to sell Homebase to retail group CDS, which owns The Range and Wilko, securing the future of up to 1,600 jobs and 70 stores.

Homebase in Hove (Image: Google Maps) In November, it was announced that the three Sussex stores had been put up for sale.

The Homebase store in Old Shoreham Road, Hove has been there since the 1990s, whilst the Lewes store in Brooks Road has been there since the early 2000s.

The Chichester store has been in Barnfield Drive since 2003.

Teneo were also appointed as TGI Fridays administrators when they went into administration earlier this year.

Breal Capital and Calveton UK acquired 51 restaurants after the group’s previous operator fell into administration.

They found a rescue deal for the restaurant chain.

But more than 1,000 staff have lost their jobs with the immediate closure of 35 restaurants including Brighton Marina.
