Gillingham have made a signing on each of the last three Fridays and the club are in the market for more.

Asher Agbinone arrived on loan from Crystal Palace first, followed by Nelson Khumbeni joining from Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea’s Jimmy-Jay Morgan’s arrival last week.

Agbinone and Morgan have added options in attack and Khumbeni brings energy to the midfield.

The Gills have been linked with a couple of central defenders playing in Scotland and Coleman has admitted it’s an area he’s looking to strengthen.

George Stanger from Ayr United is the latest defender to be linked to the Gills following speculation earlier in the transfer window that they could be interested in St Johnstone’s Jack Sanders. MK Dons are reportedly leading the race to now sign Sanders.

Coleman was reminded that his last three signings have come on a Friday and was asked about more incomings.

“Ah. That Friday feeling,” he said. “We are ongoing trying to sign players.

“I’m hopeful to have at least a couple in by Monday. Whether it’s early enough for them to play on Saturday is a different matter, or be involved on Saturday, but I am hoping to bring a couple in.”

He admitted they were looking at centre-halves and on interest in Scotland he added: “I know what (players) they are. We’re looking all over. As I said earlier on when I first came, football is a mad industry.

“You can do well and people are still trying to replace you. That’s the nature of the beast. You’ve got to always look to try and improve the squad window by window.

“There’s no point in adding if you’re not going to improve the squad. That should be the norm.

“I’d like to get better players in, or players that can make a difference to the way our season is going to pan out.

“I think we have got the makings of it here. Hopefully we can keep reinforcing the way we want to play. I think there were big signs of that in the second half on Tuesday (at Grimsby) and hopefully we’ll carry on.”

There are likely to be outgoings too before the transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday night.

Gillingham have a high number of players out of contract in the summer, many on good money, which will mean a chance to make big changes to the squad.

Some players who see the writing on the wall may look to move on now, rather than wait for the summer, as George Lapslie did when he picked up a two-and-a half year deal at Bradford City.

“Some people will probably leave,” Coleman said.

“We have got a lot of players up in the summer. I think a few will have half a mind on that as well.

“We’ve just got to try and get what we think is the best squad of players available to us to try and finish the season strong, wherever that takes us, and then be in a position to prepare well for next season.”
