Debutant striker Jimmy-Jay Morgan should be the right fit for Gillingham according to their new boss.

Manager John Coleman likes the look of their new forward player who has signed on for the remainder of the season from Chelsea.

Morgan got stuck in against Tranmere on his Football League debut before eventually being replaced in the second half after picking up a knock.

He’d been carrying an injury after a cynical challenge early on left him with a cut across his foot.

“I thought young Jimmy had a good debut,” said the Gillingham manager.

“He shows he’s a Gillingham-type player.

“He’s got heart, he wants to work, he wants to run.

“I think the fans will love him and I can’t wait for the home fans to see him play.

“I think people would have expected him to be a bit of a pushover and he was certainly feisty.

“He put himself about and I think he’ll be a really good signing for us.”

Morgan, 19, was one of two new faces in the Gillingham team at Tranmere.

Nelson Khumbeni, 22, came in on Saturday for injured Ethan Coleman into midfield, to also start the game.

Coleman said: “He felt his way into the game, got stronger as the game went on, sort of understood the role a bit better.

“We decided to make a change (in the second half) because we wanted to get a little bit more aerial presence into midfield with Robbie [McKenzie].

“We wanted to get Jack [Nolan] higher up the pitch. That’s why we went to a 4-3-3. I’d have liked us to have been a bit more progressive in that.

“We sort of got a little bit stuck in, do we want to win this game or do we just want to see how it points? I’d always go to the win, me, and run the risk of losing.”

Max Ehmer also earned praise from Coleman as did striker Elliott Nevitt, the manager saying: “Nev was Nev, he ran himself into the ground again.”

Bradley Dack made his second league start of the season and impressed the boss, who knows they still need to work on the player’s fitness.

Coleman said: “Dacky always looked a constant threat when he was on the ball. We just couldn’t get him on the ball enough for my liking.

“He put one (cross) on Jimmy’s head. He had the presence of mind to pick him out. Other people, lesser talented players might have shot there. He had the presence of mind to pick him out, unselfishly. Jimmy would be disappointed that he hasn’t got more on the header to be honest.

“I don’t think anybody can argue about Bradley Dack’s quality.

“We’ve just got to get him fitter, and we’ve got to get a lot out of him more, because he’s an undoubted talent.”
