Gillingham manager John Coleman has provided an update on injured striker Josh Andrews.

Andrews missed last weekend’s game against his former team Doncaster Rovers with a knee injury and had it scanned to reveal the nature of the problem.

The striker doesn’t require surgery but he’s still facing up two months out with a posterior cruciate ligament injury.

Coleman said: “Josh has damaged his PCL. He hasn’t got to have an operation, so we’re looking at eight to ten weeks.

“It’s disappointing for him, but that’s football.

“You have setbacks in life and it’s how you overcome them.

“He’s a strong character and hopefully he’ll get over the injury and come back and perform the way I know he can perform.”

Andrews had only recently returned to full fitness following a previous injury, having been eased back in by former boss Mark Bonner.

The 23-year-old spoke about his determination to show what he’s about under John Coleman, who managed him previously at Accrington. Andrews scored five goals in 20 league appearances during that loan period.

The Gills signed Andrews from his parent club Birmingham City on a permanent deal at the end of last year’s January transfer window, with his time at Accrington cut short by a hip injury.

He was still recovering from that when the Gills signed him. The club said the move was made to get ahead of other interested parties who could have tried to sign him when fit.

A loan spell the season before at Doncaster Rovers had also ended early because of injury, suffering with tendonitis in his knee, limiting him to just four appearances for the Yorkshire side.

The Gills had to be patient after signing him for an undisclosed fee.

Andrews made his debut off the bench almost two month after joining and ended the season with a handful of appearances, a first goal and a couple of starts.

Hopes of making an impact this season have been hampered by injuries again. He missed the first few weeks of the season after an injury-hit summer but was then forced out again for another month, reappearing as a substitute in the game at Swindon in late October.

He scored a well-taken goal at Stevenage in the EFL Trophy and started the home league match against Salford. His last appearance was in the home defeat to Bromley.

Gillingham also have Marcus Wyllie out injured.
