Sussex Police was called to an address in Port Hall Place at 6.20pm on Sunday due to ‘concerns for a man’s welfare’.

When officers arrived, a man was confirmed dead inside the property.

His next of kin have been informed, a force spokeswoman said.

An investigation was launched to find out what happened, with an ‘increased police presence’ in the area, they added.

(Image: NQ) Neighbours told The Argus they saw police in the street for two days including officers outside the building.

It is also understood forensics officers in hazmat suits were seen going in and out of the address.

The incident caused concern among many residents, who heard screaming before police arrived.

Neighbours said police had remained tight-lipped about what happened despite knocking on doors to gather evidence – describing it as a ‘disturbance’.

Police also launched an appeal for witnesses.

The spokeswoman said: “Anyone who has any information that could help is asked to contact police online or via 101, quoting serial 800 of 19/01.”

She said the incident was now being treated as non-suspicious, and the case would be handed over to the coroner.
