They were called to Queen Street at around 10.50pm, and soon after officers from Sussex Police closed the road.
A number of surrounding buildings were evacuated and residents were told to keep their windows closed because of the smoke coming from the fire.
Police and firefighters are still at the scene (at midday on Sunday).
The cause of the fire is not known.
