The 15-year-old boy appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court accused of two counts of attempted murder following the incident in Worthing.
The court was told a man and woman were attacked in their home in Rowlands Road as they slept on Monday morning.
The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address at the hearing today.
One of the victims suffered serious head injuries and lost an arm in the attack, the court was told.

He is still being treated in hospital for severe head injuries.
Sussex Police said he was disoriented when emergency services arrived to find his bedroom covered in blood.
His wife has been discharged from hospital.
Jeremy King, for the Crown Prosecution Service, told the court the man was “repeatedly struck” while the woman’s injuries are less serious but she has lacerations to her cheek, ear and leg.
Mr King said the man had “more serious injuries to his face, eyebrows and the top of the head”.
“He has suffered the loss of one of his arms,” said Mr King.
District judge Amanda Kelly remanded the boy into custody to appear again at a crown court.
Police said the boy is known to the victims, who are aged in their 40s.
Chief Inspector Kelly Lewis said: “This was a traumatic incident and our thoughts are with the two victims.
“The boy is known to the victims, and we are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident.”
Anyone with information relating to the incident is asked to report online or call 101 quoting Operation Bransford.
