Emergency services flocked to Brighton seafront in the early hours of Saturday, January 4, following concerns for a woman in the water.

Officers found the woman, who is in her 20s, in the sea, which was believed to be “sub-zero” in temperature.

The officers decided to enter the water and rescue the woman due to the risk she faced.

She was brought safely to shore and left in the care of the ambulance service.

Chief Inspector Si Marchant said: “This incident is yet another example of how our officers go above and beyond – entering the water in sub-zero temperatures on this occasion – to ensure the safety of the public.

“I’d like to commend the officers involved for their swift actions, which ultimately saved the life of a woman who was in danger.”

A spokeswoman for HM Coastguard said: “HM Coastguard assisted Sussex Police with an incident at Brighton seafront.

“Alerted shortly before 1.45am on Saturday, January 4, Newhaven and Shoreham Coastguard Rescue Teams were tasked alongside Brighton RNLI lifeboat.

“The person was handed to the care of South East Coast Ambulance Service.”
