The Burgess Hill Youth Council elected a mayor and deputy mayor for 2024/25 on Wednesday, December 11, in a meeting at the council chamber.

The election was held via secret ballot with an official polling booth and ballot box, and the appointment was decided by a coin toss after two candidates tied with the highest number of votes.

Zahra Bayer from Burgess Hill Academy is the new youth mayor, while Isabel Dallman from Sheddingdean Primary takes on the role of deputy youth mayor.

The new appointees replace Harvey Hilton and Molly Thompson, who were commended for their work representing the youth council over the past year.

Zahra then chaired a meeting where youth council members discussed the results of surveys carried out in schools.

The surveys, which polled hundreds of local children, revealed their favourite events in Burgess Hill—bonfire night, fireworks displays, and the Christmas light switch-on.

Children also suggested new events, such as scavenger hunts, school choir and music festivals, and football tournaments.

These proposals will be presented to the town council’s community engagement committee and discussed further at the next youth council meeting.
