The West Pier Centre in Brighton will be hosting a sale of “special key artefacts” from the original West Pier on Saturday, December 14 from 10 till 2pm.
These artefacts have been described as “beautiful and unique cast iron pieces with some minor damage”.
Items include an exceptional cast-iron serpent lamp column, rare cast-iron seat backs, both of which lined the perimeter of the original 1866 pier deck and a metal urn that decorated the roof of the 1916 Concert Hall.
The serpent lamp column was previously priced at £10,000 and the roof urn at £5,000.
The West Pier opened in 1866 during a boom in pleasure pier building. It was extended in 1893, and a concert hall was added in 1916.
After closing to the public in 1975, the pier fell into disrepair and gradually collapsed. Major sections fell into the sea during storms in late 2002, and two separate fires, both thought to be arson, in March and May 2003 destroyed most of the remaining structure, leading to English Heritage declaring it beyond repair.
