Licensed premises received recognition at the Best Bar None (BBN) ceremony in the ballroom of the Grand Central Hotel on Wednesday, November 13.

Entries soared to record numbers this year and 84 venues were given ‘gold’ awards, 31 of which won in their first year of entering.

Two Wetherspoons pubs, The Crystal Palace and Sir John Moore, were named among the winners, achieving the prize in the Standard category, while The Jenny Burn was named in the Restaurant category and The National Piping Centre in the Hotel category. 

Brunch spot The Singl-end Café won the Best Newcomer award, while city centre bar Manuka and The Quaich pub in Shawlands were joint winners of the Most Improved Venue category.

SWG3 won the Sustainability Award for the second year running, as the venue has a dancefloor which generates sustainable energy and also operates a reusable cup deposit system.

Prestigious overall Gold awards went to The Garage and The Howlin’ Wolf in the Late Night category, while the University of Strathclyde Students Union won in the Specialist category.

The Lea-Rig was named Community Pub and Bag O’Nails earned the title for Community Pub with Food).

Scott Dorman and Davie Miller, both of King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, were named joint winners in the Designated Premises Manager of the Year category.

Each pub, club and bar is inspected ahead of the awards by four independent assessors.

They were judged on their efforts in Prevention of Crime & Disorder, Securing Public Safety, Prevention of Public Nuisance, Promotion of Public Health and the Protection of Children from Harm.

Lise Fisher of BBN Glasgow said: “It is great to see so many city venues striving to achieve excellence in customer safety and providing an enjoyable experience for customers.  

“The results are a true testament to the ongoing hard work and dedication of licensees and their staff across the city. 

“Glasgow’s licensees are currently preparing for the festive season, and customers should look out for the distinctive BBN Glasgow awards on display in winning venues.”

BBN Glasgow has been running since 2005 and is delivered on behalf of the city’s Alcohol and Drugs Partnership (ADP) in partnership with Glasgow City Council, Retailers Against Crime (RAC), Police Scotland and the Licensed Trade.

Members benefit from regular training on topics such as stewarding, crime scene preservation, drug awareness, responsible drinking and recognising and protecting vulnerable people.

Winners of the overall gold awards will now go through to compete in the National Best Bar None awards.
