The Lewes District Council team started at 2am and finished at 7.30am to clear seven tonnes of rubbish after the town’s famous bonfire night celebrations.

A 22-strong clean-up team worked throughout the night (Image: Lewes District Council) Councillor Wendy Maples, cabinet member for neighbourhood wellbeing, said: “The Environment First Team did an incredible job.

“The team works through the night, so when the sun comes up, it’s hard to believe there were tens of thousands of people and hundreds of thousands of firecrackers all over Lewes just a few hours before.

“Last night’s overflowing bins, and litter-strewn streets and pavements are now fresh and tidy, thanks to the wonderful Environment First team.”

The Mayor of Lewes, cllr Imogen Makepeace served breakfast to the team the next morning (Image: Lewes Town Council) A reusable cup scheme instigated by Green United and piloted by Lewes Town Council in 2023 was expanded this year, helping to reduce the amount of plastic litter on the streets.

The next morning, The Mayor of Lewes, Councillor Imogen Makepeace, woke up early to serve a Full English breakfast to the street cleaners in thanks for their hard work.
