Apple has decided to step back from investing in OpenAI’s funding round. This is a choice that was made pretty late in the process. The tech company, usually cautious with such things, surprised many with this choice. While the exact reasons haven’t been given, the withdrawal has most definitely drawn attention.

Had Apple gone through with the investment, it would have been a rare case of backing another major company. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is still pushing to raise $6.5 billion from other investors like Microsoft and Nvidia, who remain interested.

How Much Is OpenAI Looking To Raise?

OpenAI is looking at making $6.5 billion in its current round, which could value the company at $150 billion. Microsoft, already one of OpenAI’s main investors, is expected to contribute $1 billion more. This partnership gave Microsoft an opportunity to have OpenAI’s tools integrated into products like Copilot and Bing chat.

Nvidia, a big name in AI, is thinking of making a $100 million contribution. Other companies, such as Thrive Capital and Tiger Global, are also involved. OpenAI’s reputation as a top AI company has made this funding round a very important one in tech.

Why is OpenAI So Attractive To Investors?

OpenAI has gained a strong reputation in AI, especially with its development of models like ChatGPT. These tools have made huge differences in how businesses and consumers actually use AI.

Microsoft, which has already invested $13 billion in OpenAI, before the upcoming $1 billion.

OpenAI itself is dealing with changes at the leadership level, as some executives have left the company recently. It has also changed from being a nonprofit structure to a for-profit model under CEO Sam Altman. These internal adjustments haven’t slowed down its growth, though.

Though Apple won’t be investing in OpenAI’s funding round, the two companies still have ties. Apple has announced plans to integrate ChatGPT features into an upcoming iOS update, giving users access to AI-powered tools on their devices.

On the brighter side, Softbank will be investing $500 million in this very round, which would make this SoftBank’s first direct investment in OpenAI. This was announced during the news surrounding Apple and OpenAI. This could at least add some weight and send OpenAI higher towards their goal.

What Else Is New With OpenAI?

Investment news aside, OpenAI has still been working on new ways to bring AI to us. They recently upgraded their Moderation API, introducing a model based on GPT-4o. This new system can handle both text and images, so its better at identifying harmful content, like violence and self-harm. It also performs better across more languages, making it a useful tool for platforms serving global audiences.

The update provides more control for developers, who can fine-tune moderation with better scoring methods. It’s free to use, allowing different industries to benefit from safer content management without extra costs.

What’s Happening With Mercado Libre And OpenAI?

Mercado Libre, Latin America’s largest ecommerce company, has also been working with OpenAI to launch Verdi, a new AI platform powered by GPT-4o. This platform helps the company manage customer service, resolve disputes, and personalise product recommendations.

With Verdi’s integration, Mercado Libre is looking to speed up delivery times and improve customer experiences as a whole.
