Labour Councillor Gill Williams was filmed after the cabinet meeting at Hove Town Hall on Thursday afternoon.

In a clip published on X, formerly Twitter, she said to a member of the public: “I am trying to answer a question and the officers’ responses are always s**t so I have to write my own.”

In a statement this afternoon, Cllr Williams said: “I am very sorry for what is in the recording. Officers work very hard and I am hugely grateful for their work.”

Councillor Steve Davis, the leader of the Greens, said: “We’re shocked to hear Cllr Williams’ comments to a resident in Hove Town Hall yesterday. Council officers work hard doing an increasingly difficult job and deserve the full support of councillors.

“A Labour cabinet member describing their work as ‘always s**t’ to a member of the public is completely unacceptable and falls far below the standards that should be expected of elected members.

“Undermining staff in this way erodes trust in our council and actively harms the relationship between councillors and the officers who make the day-to-day running of our city possible. We are calling on Cllr Williams to make a full public apology at the next full council.

“It’s not apparent if Cllr Williams was aware she was being recorded when she made this statement. To be clear – we absolutely do not condone the covert filming of councillors or officers, and believe people have the right to be told when they are being recorded.”
