The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the River Darent stretching 17 miles from Westerham to Dartford, with warnings of possible flooding from 8am today (September 23).

Where is the alert in place?

The alert is in place on the River Darent from Westerham to Dartford, including:

  • Brasted
  • Sundridge
  • Chipstead
  • Dunton Green
  • Otford
  • Eynsford
  • South Darenth

The alert has been issued following heavy rainfall, with flooding possible throughout the day today.

Areas most at risk of flooding today include low lying land and roads along the River Darent.

Further rainfall is expected, with a yellow weather warning in place for large parts of south England in place until 11:59pm today (September 23).

In a statement online, the Environment Agency advised that rainfall levels are currently being monitored and that debris from weed screens were being cleared today.

Locals are being advised to check for further updates, with another update expected this evening at 8pm.

What to do

Residents in affected areas are being advised to monitor local water levels and weather conditions while flood alerts are in place, and to act on their flood plans.

People are also advised to avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding.
