Emergency services scoured the coast near the Newhaven Ferry Port in the early hours of this morning following the report.

An HM Coastguard spokeswoman said: “We have been assisting after receiving a report of a missing person on a ferry at Newhaven.

“Alerted at around 10.20pm on September 17, Newhaven and Birling Gap coastguard rescue teams were tasked alongside a HM Coastguard helicopter from Lydd, Newhaven RNLI inshore lifeboat and Newhaven RNLI all-weather lifeboat.

“Sussex Police and Border Force also attended. After a thorough search it was confirmed that the person was never on board.”
