Cameron Boxall pleaded not guilty to kidnapping the woman as she walked alone in Hove last month. He appeared at Brighton Magistrates Court sitting as a crown court.
Mr Boxall, 21, denies forcing the woman, identified only as Miss A, into a car after asking her for directions.
She said she managed to break free from the vehicle.
Sussex Police said they launched an investigation after a woman said she was kidnapped at the junction of Selbourne Road and Church Road at 2am on August 5.
Mr Boxall, of Carden Hill, Brighton denies kidnap.
He faces trial in February next year.
