Funding from Transport Scotland’s Road Safety Improvement Fund (RSIF) is set to be allocated to a range of projects prioritized by road safety officials. These projects were selected based on an analysis of accident data, vehicle speeds, and high-traffic crossings.
The city administration committee is expected to approve the funding allocation at a meeting on Thursday.
Plans include investing £230,000 to upgrade traffic signals at the Balmore Road and Ashgill Road junction, incorporating tactile cones and paving. Additionally, £58,000 will be used to enhance crossings at eight locations, improving “active travel journeys and road safety” with the installation of tactile cones. The locations for these upgrades are: Ashtree Road/Shawbridge Street; Pollokshaws Road/Maxwell Road/Eglinton Toll; Gallowgate/Sword Street; Dumbarton Road/Hawick Street; Pollokshaws Road/Titwood Road; Paisley Road West/Lourdes Avenue; Dalmarnock Road/Summerfield Street; and Old Shettleston Road/McNair Street.
Officials reported that the Scottish Government is committed to a “Safe System approach” to road safety, emphasizing that travel should not compromise life or health. The RSIF aims to support councils in achieving road casualty reduction goals.
Additional projects include traffic calming measures, such as pedestrian islands and speed cushions, at Shields Road, Arrochar Street, and Rothes Drive. A footway extension and pedestrian island are planned for Langside Avenue at Camphill Avenue/Mansionhouse Road, and speed cushions will be installed at Lochend Road.
The council’s report highlighted that this funding will support road safety initiatives focused on safer speeds, roads, and roadside conditions. All allocated funds must be utilized within this financial year.
